Empowerment
Moscow, March 6, 2017 (dpa/NAN) The Central Asian Republic of Kazakhstan has withdrawn some powers from the president to the parliament in a reform of the country’s constitution, a report said on Monday.
The cabinet of ministers is also empowered to be as subordinate to the parliament as it is to President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who has ruled the former Soviet state for more than two decades.
Experts believe that the move could help to avoid a power struggle in case the 76-year-old president dies without an apparent successor.
Nazarbayev’s Political Party Nur Otan (“Radiant Fatherland,” a reference to the state symbol of a sun shining in a blue sky) wields majority control of the parliament. (dpa/NAN)
