Katsina, Feb. 14, 2018 (NAN) Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina State says the 34 local councils in the state would have their political leadership in the next two months.
Masari disclosed this on Wednesday in Katsina while receiving the Executive Council, Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE).
“In the next one to two months, we are going to have political leadership in our local councils.
“We will give them their funds to execute projects but we will closely monitor them on how they will spend them,’’ he said.
The governor also said that Contributory Pension scheme remained the only alternative to solving pension problems in the state.
“Allocation to states and local governments from the Federation Account has been dropping due to decrease in the price of crude oil in the international market.
“That has affected the efforts of governments in improving the living condition of people.
“So, if not because of the bailout support from President Muhammadu Buhari, we don’t know what will happen.
“Since 2015 the President has been giving funds to states and local governments to settle salaries, pensions and gratuities.
“Now we need a pension system that is sustainable because Paris Club refunds will finish one time,’’ he said.
He urged the union to be checking activities of local government administration with a view to ensure proper management in the system.
Masari also said that the state government would investigate the non-implementation of promotions for local government staff in the state.
The NULGE President, Mr Aliyu Haruna, had earlier urged the governor to settle promotion arrears for members.
Haruna also called for placing the Heads of Local Government Administration on consolidated salary structure just like Permanent Secretaries in the state civil service.
He commended the state government for reinstating 2,000 local government staff sacked by the past administration.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the state government dissolved the local councils in July 2015. (NAN)
