Katsina LG provides 1,500 liter of agro chemicals to farmers

Sandamu (Katsina state) May 10 2018 (NAN) Sandamu Local Government Area in Katsina State has provided 1,500 liters of agro chemicals to irrigation farmers in the area to boost agricultural yields.
Malam Usman Ahmed, the council’s director of agriculture made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Sandamu.
He said that the pesticides were provided free of charge to 1,000 registered irrigation farmers, noting that the gesture was aimed at promoting agricultural activities and encouraging farmers.
He said that the council has also engaged in provision of free agricultural extension services to the irrigation farmers.
“ Our personnel had gone round 2,000 farmlands to render extension services and every necessary advice to the irrigation farmers.
“The council in collaboration with the European Union project on improving the Fuel Wood Balance FUWOBA has also raised additional 120,000 seedlings of trees that would be planted across the council area,’’ he said.
Ahmed said the aim of the programme was to promote the concept of green environment, reduce instances of deforestation and prevent desertification.
He noted that the trees planted included mango, moringa, amarathus, cashew, onions, vegetables, fruits, sugarcane and timber, which would also boost the income of the farmers.
The director noted that the council has created a synergy with Fadama III+ project in provision of agricultural inputs to farmers, adding that about 2,500 farmers received fertilizers, water pumping machines, pesticides and assorted seedlings.
In a related development the local council has began a five-day training for 61 health personnel on how to improve their performance on routine immunisation.
Hajiya Sakina Zango, the council’s director of primary health care told the NAN that the training was to enhance coverage of routine immunisation on the six child killer diseases that include Polio, Measles, Whooping cough, Tetanus and Diphtheria.
She described the diseases as dangerous to the life of children and called on care givers to ensure that the full immunisation of their children to boost their immunity.
NAN reports that about 3,500 children suffering from malnutrition are presently accessing treatment against the disease in the area. (NAN)
