Kano, Feb. 15, 2018 (NAN) The Kano State Hisbah Board says it has arrested eight beggars in Kano metropolis for allegedly violating the law banning street begging in the state.
The Officer-in-charge of Anti-Begging Unit of the board, Malam Dahiru Nuhu, disclosed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Thursday.
Nuhu said the suspects were arrested during different raids in the metropolis, adding that all of them were children.
He said the arrests were carried out in areas around hospitals and restaurants, but were released and warned after confirming that they were first offenders.
Nuhu further explained that the children were of between nine years and 13 years of age.
He, therefore, advised parents to take proper care of their wards and stop sending them out to beg for alms “to forestall any unpleasant circumstances”.
NAN reports that violation of the law banning street begging in the state attracts a minimum of a three-month jail term on conviction. (NAN)
