Kano, Dec. 20, 2016 (NAN) Kano State Government says it will upgrade its College of Arts and Remedial Studies (CAS) to become a full-fledge NCE awarding institution.

The Deputy Governor, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, made the pledge when he received an accreditation team from the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) on Tuesday in Kano.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the team was in Kano to assess the National Certificate of Education (NCE), courses being offered at the college.

He said that CAS joined other Colleges of Education in running NCE courses in the state “in order to open more opportunities for the training of teachers due to high demand for qualified teachers.’’

Abubakar explained that Kano had more than 8000 public primary schools with a population of over three million pupils.

He added that the state also had more than 50,000 teachers, but that only half of them had required minimum teaching qualification.

“To address this problem, the state is training the unqualified teachers at NCE awarding institutions’’, he told the team.

Abubakar expressed appreciation to the team for their painstaking efforts toward ensuring improved standard of education at the NCE level.

He urged the team to visit other institutions to appreciate the level of the state government’s commitment to improving education.

Leader of the team, Mr Tajuddeen Ajao, said they were in the state to ascertain required facilities on ground for full accreditation of NCE courses being run by CAS. (NAN)
