Kano, March 28, 2017 (NAN) The Kano State Government has spent N794 million on the construction of 789 borehole across the state.
Alhaji Yahaya Garun-Ali, the Managing Director of the state Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), made this known in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Kano.
He said that the project, being executed in collaboration with UNICEF, was expected to be completed in three months.
He said that the state government had also entered into an agreement with UNICEF on the construction of another set of 220 boreholes in Takai and Madobi Local Government Areas.
Garun-Ali said the state government constructed 462 boreholes across the 44 local government areas of the state under the first phase of the project last year.
He said that 166 boreholes would be repaired and made functional, while 34 motorised and seven solar-powered boreholes would also be constructed in some selected areas of the state.
According to him, the boreholes will reduce the hardships facing rural dwellers in getting potable water.
“We have decided to provide sustainable water sources, especially in our remote villages, so as to make life more meaningful to the people,” he said.
Garun-Ali He said the agency had received 4,000 requests for borehole construction from communities and individuals that were in need of safe drinking water.
He, however, urged the benefiting communities to protect the facilities from acts of vandalism.
“Government property are our property; so, we should not allow undesirable elements to destroy them,’’ he added.
Garun-Ali urged the people to continue to support the administrations of President Muhammadu Buhari and Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State for their commitments to efforts to move the country forward. (NAN)
