Clarification
Kano, Feb. 21, 2017 (NAN) The Committee set up by the Kano Emirate Council on Islamic Family Law has made some clarifications with regards to its assignment.

The Chairman of the Marriage Committee and Chief Imam of Al-Furqan Mosque in Kano, Dr Bashir Umar, made the clarifications while briefing newsmen in Kano on Tuesday.

Umar said the committee which comprised eminent Islamic scholars would spell out whatever the sharia said with regards to marriage or Muslim Islamic Family law.

According to him, there are two conditions which a man has to fulfill before he could take a second, third or fourth wife.

“The first condition is that he must make sure he will ensure fairness between or among them (wives), and secondly he must have the means to practice polygamy. This is what Sharia provides,” he said.

According to the chairman, the committee will also look at what is obtained in other Muslim countries before submitting its report to the main committee.

“The Committee will not bring anything that is outside the Sharia. When it completes its assignment, it will forward the draft to the main Committee of Ulamas for consideration and approval,” he said.

He said the essence of the committee was to check indiscriminate divorce; to ensure proper child upbringing including his education as well as to ensure implementation of the Child Rights act because Islam had made provision for it.

Umar said the intention was not to prevent people from marrying more than one wife or practicing polygamy, but to check the abuse of the system and ensure sanity.

He explained that the committee would not spell out punishment for offenders, but that any aggrieved woman can sue or take legal action against her husband who violated the Sharia.

NAN reports that the two other committees set up by the Emirate Council are the Education Committee especially on girl-child, and the Committee on Zakkat and Endowment to enhance collection and disbursement of Zakkat for the poor. (NAN).
