Lagos, May 23, 2017 (NAN) Some judo coaches who participated in the just-concluded International Judo Federation (IJF) coaching course in Zambia, said on Tuesday that the programme was impactful.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 13 Nigerian coaches were part of the 41 coaches from 11 countries that participated in the course held from May 12 to May 20.

The coaches, who returned to Nigeria on May 20, told NAN that the timing of the course was apt.

Catherine Ewa-Ekuta, a judo coach in the Akwa Ibom Sports Council, said that the course was an eye opener to new coaching techniques in Judo.

Ewa-Ekuta, who won gold at the 2003 African Games, said she would apply all the knowledge gained from the course in coaching her athletes.

“We were taught the things that we know before as coaches but in a different way and dimension because the sport keeps evolving.

“We were also educated on the ethics of sports generally and I’m delighted to be part of it,’’ she said.

Also, Wasilat Omobola-Tijani, a coach in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, said that it was a privilege to be part of the course.

Omobola-Tijani said that the programme came at the right time the country needed improvement in the sport.

“After all the ups and downs in judo, this course is part of what we need to set the sport back on track and I am happy we were part of it,’’ she said.

Speaking in the same vein, Ewa Ekuta, also a coach in Akwa Ibom, said that the programme impacted advanced technical knowledge and they were taught new techniques needed to teach judo to young athletes. (NAN)
