Housebreaking

Lagos, Jan. 11, 2017 (NAN) A 32-year-old unemployed man, Adetunji Abdulsalam, who allegedly broke into a shop and stole goods worth N150,000, was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
Abdulsalam, whose address is unknown, is being tried for burglary and stealing.
According to the prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, the accused committed the offences on Jan.1 at 12.30 a.m. at Odunalayo Street, Ojokoro, a Lagos suburb, on the Lagos-Abeokuta Highway.
“The accused broke into the shop of the complainant (names withheld) and stole adult and babies wears, shoes, a television set and a DVD player, all valued at N150,000,” he said.
Nwosu said that the complainant received a tip-off from her neighbour, who saw the accused breaking into the shop.
“The complainant rushed to her shop but met the accused at the exit gate of the street carrying a bag.
“The accused was questioned, the bag was searched and the complainant recovered her items.
“The accused was immediately handed over to the security guards, who called in the police,” he told the court.
The offences contravened Sections 285 and 307 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused may be jailed for seven years if found guilty, according to the provisions of Section 307.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mr A.A. Adesanya, adjourned the case to Jan. 23 for mention. (NAN)
