Jigawa Literacy Agency to establish 220 additional centres

Dutse, Feb. 27, 2017 (NAN) The Jigawa Agency for Mass Literacy has concluded arrangements to establish additional 135 post-basic and 85 basic literacy centres across the state.

The Executive Secretary of State Agency for Mass Education, Alhaji Abbas Abbas, who stated this in Dutse in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said each each local government area would have at least three centres.

The executive secretary also said that the agency had targeted 30,000 learners in its basic literacy programme.

Abbas stated that a programme of his agency aired through the radio, had increased literacy rate in the state by 56 per cent.

He said that the programme, broadcast twice a week, was targeted at specific communities considered to have high level of illiteracy.

He disclosed that his agency would admit 20,000 candidates in its remedial programme for those who did not pass Mathematics and English Language in their Senior Secondary School Certificate examinations.

He recalled that 10,000 of such candidates were taught under the programme in 2016.

Abbas stated that 7,000 would be registered in its Continued Education programme for those who dropped out of school. (NAN)
