By Kazeem Akande
Lagos, Dec. 11, 2016 (NAN) Mr Ibrahim Jibril, the National President, Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), on Sunday appealed to the National Assembly to ensure quick passage of the CILT Bill.
Jibril told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the bill, when passed and assented to, would ensure the rebuilding of the nation’s transport system.
He said that the bill, recently presented to the National Assembly by Sen. Gbenga Ashafa, (APCLagos-East), was aimed at establishing the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.
According to him, the bill seeks to determine standard of knowledge, skills and qualifications of persons seeking to become chartered logisticians in Nigeria.
“Undoubtedly, the task ahead is quite arduous and challenging but CILT currently does not have the recognition it should have by the government at all levels and industry.
“Therefore, the need to step up actions with respect to passage of the CILT Bill is paramount and will be a major focal point of the institute,” he said.
Jibril noted that logistics and transport were integral components of development in every economy.
He said that the institute was fully aware of the complex task ahead and was working toward achieving the aims and objectives of making transportation more effective in the country.
The CILT president said that the institute would actively engage the public and private sectors, through research and capacity building programmes, to proffer solutions to the challenges in the logistics and transport sector.
Jibril also noted that the country was on downward trend in the Logistics Performance Index (LPI), in spite the fact that logistics was one of the parameters for measuring global business efficiency.
He said that the institute would ensure adequate assessment of the state-of-the industry and use the stock pile of experts to address the negative trend in the transport sector.
“We must strive to ensure we act as a voice for members by making quality contribution on national issues that concern the logistics and transport sector.
“The institute will proactively engage the young professional members as a way of assuring the future and next generation of logistics and transport professionals in Nigeria.”
Jibril also advised the government to come up with policy that would bring effectiveness to transport and logistics system in the country.
The CILT president appealed to about 140 members of the institute inducted on Saturday in Lagos to keep the flag of the institute flying.
He also urged them to ensure complete compliance with standards and ethics of the profession (NAN)
