Bauchi, Sept. 25, 2017 (NAN) The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said on Monday it had introduced educational grants and scholarships to winners of its Junior Engineers, Technicians and Scientists (JETS) competition.
Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr Ndu Ughamadu, represented by Mr Abu Kabir, an officer from the division, stated this in Bauchi at the North East Zonal Finals of the 2017 NNPC Annual National Quiz Competition.
“Beginning from this year, the Corporation will be providing a one-off educational grant of N100,000.00 each for all state winners of the competition while a scholarship award of N300,000.00 per session will be granted to the overall winner of the competition.
“The 2nd and 3rd place winners will receive a scholarship of N250, 000.00 and N200,000.00 per session respectively, for the duration of their tertiary education,” he said.
According to him, all scholarship awards and one-off educational grants would be redeemed upon presentation of evidence of admission into tertiary institutions.
He said that a number of innovations had been introduced to enhance the integrity and status of the annual completion.
“These innovations include the cooperation’s partnership with the West African Examination Council (WAEC), the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS), as well as the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), to raise the quality and standard of the competition,” he said.
Ughamadu expressed satisfaction with the achievements of the competition, adding that so far, it had lived up to its expectation of impacting positively on the intellectuals of young Nigerians, preparing them for the future.
In her remarks, the Director, Policy Implementation, Bauchi State Ministry of Education, Mrs Louis Musa, commended NNPC for its gesture and urged participants to take advantage of opportunities provided.
The News agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that at the end of the North East Zonal level of the competition, Ms Chidubem Igbokwe from Borno and Mr Usman Auwal from Taraba emerged winners with 50 points each, while Ms Azirewe Boti from Adamawa emerged third with 35 points.
In an interview with NAN, Prof. Ikechukwu Igbokwe, an indigene of Abia, whose daughter, Chidubem, represented Borno in the competition, expressed delight over such competition, commending participants for their ability to answer questions from various fields of study.
“I am impressed because the participants performed wonderfully; some of the questions are tough but were still answered; the competition was transparent; I commend the teachers and school management for wonderful job,” he said.
Also speaking to NAN, overall winners, Chiduben Igbokwe and Usman Auwal, commended NNPC for introducing the competition and called on other organisations to do same.(NAN)
