Insurgency: Commission organises workshop for military personnel on Human Rights protection

Damaturu, May 23, 2017 (NAN) The National Human Rights Commission on Tuesday in Damaturu commenced a three-day workshop  for  military  personnel fighting Boko Haram insurgents  in the North East .

Speaking at the occasion, Mrs Oti Ovrawah, Acting Executive Secretary of the commission, said the workshop was aimed at updating security personnel, especially the military, on the rules of engagement and protection of human rights.

“This training is a component of the commission’s project with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees on protection and monitoring of the situation of Internally Displaced Persons in the North East.

“The training would assist security personnel working in the North east carry out the counter insurgency operations in line with international human rights standards,” she said.

The Secretary urged security agents to comply with human rights standards in the discharge of their duties.

Brig-Gen. Henry Wisley, Commandant, Army Headquarters Base 3, Damaturu, said the military operations in the North East had substantially ensured the non-violation of the fundamental rights of people in the affected communities.

He said all officers and men of the Nigerian army had been trained on respecting the rights of people as contained in the rules of engagement of the operations.

Wisley commended the commission for the training, which he said would serve as a reminder in the course of their operations in the North east. (NAN)
