New Delhi, May 9, 2017 (Xinhua/NAN) The India’s federal government has asked its states to link the country’s prisons with courts through video conferencing for speedy trial, official says.
The directive came from the country’s Home Ministry on Tuesday, adding that it would save costs of transporting of those on trials to the courts.
“Prison e-system should be integrated with crime and criminal tracking network and systems as well as e-courts on priority basis.
“It also stresses upon combined training of prison, police, health department and judiciary on under trial management should be conducted periodically,” an official quoting the order said.
According to a report on “Prison Statistics India 2015” released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in2016, thousands of people are currently languishing in jails across India, much to the capacity of prisons.
It said that 67 per cent of the people in Indian jails were people not convicted of any crime and currently on trial in a court of law.
The report said the government had been spending huge amount of money for ferrying under trials to courts. (Xinhua/NAN)
