Osogbo, Feb. 16, 2017 (NAN) Prof. Dayo Alao, the Vice Chancellor of Adeleke University, Ede, Osun, has called on government at all levels to increase budgetary allocation to the education sector.
Alao made the call in Osogbo on Thursday at an interactive programme tagged, ‘Frontliners’, organised by the Association of Veteran Journalists, Osun Chapter.
The vice chancellor said the budgetary allocation to education by all levels of government was far below the 25 per cent recommended by the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
He said it was sad that what government was budgeting for education was below 10 per cent, adding that this was not good for the development of the sector.
Alao also called on government to improve the sector by offering scholarship to brilliant students in tertiary institutions.
On the current economic recession, Alao said the way out was for the nation to go back to agriculture.
“We are so blessed in this country. There is nothing that we plant that will not grow.
” The oil can no longer sustain our economy and that is why we have to go back to agriculture.
“If our palm trees are well taken care of, it will be enough for export,’’ he said.
On welfare of journalists, the vice chancellor said it was sad that many media organisations were not paying salaries and allowances of their staff.
Alao, who said this was forcing journalists to be corrupt, called on media organisation to make the welfare of their workers a priority so as to ensure professionalism.(NAN)
