Minna, Sept. 16, 2017 (NAN) The Chairman of Kontagora Local Government Area of Niger, Alhaji Ahmed Attahiru, says his council’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) stands at N4 million monthly.

Attahiru disclosed this on Saturday to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on the sidelines of a capacity building workshop for Local Government Àreas officials in the state.

He said Kontagora was generating N1 million before he came on board in 2016, adding that the engagement of consultants helped to turn around the council’s financial fortunes.

“Our IGR has really improved compared to what obtained in the past.

“When I came on board it was nothing to write home about but with the engagement of some consultants we have been able to go up,” he said.

He added his voice to the push for local government autonomy, saying it was the only way forward for grassroots development in the country.

The chairman highlighted some of his successes to include the provision of 30 power tillers to farmers and establishment of national identity card center in Kontagora.

“We’ve been able to establish the national I. D card centre to reduce the hardship faced by residents who had to come to Minna for that service.

“And now with the establishment of the center in Kontagora, other neighboring Local Government’s are benefiting from it.

“We’ve also bought about 30 power tillers for our farmers as well as renovated a burnt treasury block at the cost of N7 million,” he added.

He commended the security agencies for curbing the menace of kidnapping and armed robbery which was rampant in his domain.

NAN reports that the workshop tagged: Evolving Strategic Development Initiatives at Local Government Level of Niger was aimed at building capacity of council staff for better service delivery. (NAN)
