Husband-surety arraigned for failing to produce wife in court, gets N100, 000 bail

Lagos, March 23, 2018 (NAN) A 38-year-old man, Emeka Chibueze, who bailed his wife at the police station and failed to produce her for prosecution in court, was on Thursday bought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
The accused, who resides at No. 10, Ogundeji St., Oke-Odo in Agege area of Lagos, is facing a charge of intent to pervert the course of justice.
According to the Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Nomayo Kenrich, the accused committed the offence on Feb. 4 at Oke-Odo Police station in a Lagos suburb.
He said the accused stood as a surety for his wife, Tessy Chibueze, who is being accused of assault.
“The husband promised to produce the suspect anytime she is needed by the police but failed to do so.
“The accused also entered into a bond of N100, 000 for the bail of his wife, Tessy, who was in the custody of police, promising to produce her on Feb. 16.
“He perverted the course of justice by failing to produce her accordingly,” the prosecutor told the court.
The offence contravened Section 97 (3) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised) which attracts two years imprisonment.
The accused, however, pleaded innocence of the offence.
Ruling on the bail application of the accused, the Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, granted him N100, 000 bail with one surety in like sum.
Kubeinje said the surety should be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment and adjourned the case until April 10. (NAN)
