Yangon, April 27, 2017 (dpa/NAN) A group of International Human Rights Organisations on Thursday called on governments to engage Myanmar to support an upcoming UN fact-finding mission into alleged human rights abuses in the country.
The government had earlier rejected the inquiry.
“We are deeply concerned that if the government of Myanmar fails to fully cooperate with the Fact-Finding Mission, the situation in Rakhine state may further deteriorate”, the organisers said an open letter to governments around the world.
Myanmar has been in the limelight over the past few months with a military led security operation in Rakhine state that observers say has spiralled out of control.
At least 70,000 people fled to neighbouring Bangladesh.
They blame soldiers of rape, torture and extrajudicial killings of Rohingya Muslims, a minority that has been discriminated in Myanmar for decades.
After a report released by the UN in February indicated that the atrocities might amount to crimes against humanity.
The UN Human Rights Council decided in March to launch a fact-finding mission which the Myanmar government said was not helpful. (dpa/NAN)
