Jos, Jan. 3, 2017 (NAN) Tea, pap and bean cake sellers popularly called in Hausa as “Mai-Shayi, Mai-Koko and Kosai” are making brisk businesses as the Harmattan bites harder in Jos and environs.
A check by the News of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos and environs revealed that there have been sudden rush by residents for Mai-Shayi, Mai-Koko and Kosai to keep themselves warm.
NAN reports that the sellers acknowledged high patronage and recorded huge profits from customers.
A pap and bean cake seller in Bukuru, Mrs Zainab Usman, told NAN that the high demand started at the inception of the harmattan in the first week of December 2016.
According to her, I usually make a measure of beans and two measures of groundnut/rice pap, called kunu geda in Hausa, but now I make three to four measures of beans and five measures of pap.
Usman, who said that she begins her daily sells between 6 a.m and 10 a.m., added that most of her customers were tricycle, commercial bus and taxi drivers.
She said she was very thankful for the weather as it had enabled her make huge gains.
Another pap and bean cake seller, Miss Jecinta Nwocha, corroborated the high patronage during this year’s harmattan.
Mr Adamu Hassan, a tea or mai-shayi in Hausa, said that he had enjoyed high patronage from the beginning of the haramattan.
According to him, in a day I fry between three and four crates of eggs for my customers.
He said most customers ask for big cup of tea or chocolate to keep warm, adding that “business has been very good for me with the commencement of the cold weather”.
Mr Dung Zang, a commercial tricycle operator, told NAN at the tea spot that he leaves home early and takes hot tea at intervals because of the cold weather to keep warm.
“This weather is very cold, asides the jacket and head warmer I am wearing, I still need to be kept warm on the inside, that’s why I do not play with taking this tea, it’s now a normal morning routine for me ,” Zang said.(NAN)
