Kano, Feb. 22, 2017 (NAN) Dr Hadiza Galadanchi, a Consultant Gynaecologist based in Kano has urged women to ensure they are vaccinated against cervical cancer.

The gynaecologist made the call in Kano on Wednesday at a one-day sensitisation programme on “Menstrual Hygiene and Cervical Cancer’’.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme was organised by a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) Sure Start.

Galadanchi said that there was the need for young women between the ages of 10 and 15 to be vaccinated against the deadly disease.

The medical practitioner urged women to undergo proper routine checks, especially pap smear and breast screening annually to ensure they were free from the disease.

She appealed to governments and parents to provide the vaccines for female students to ensure a healthier community.

Some doctors, who also spoke at the workshop, Warshu Haruna and Maryam Sulaiman stressed the importance of menstrual hygiene management. They explained that lack of menstrual hygiene could make women prone to many categories of illness, especially cancer.

The Coordinator of the NGO, Hajiya Fatima Bamalli said that the sensitisation was organised for female students to educate them on personal hygiene.

According to her, the increasing cases of cervical cancer in our society are a wakeup call for us and so we decided to embark on the campaign. (NAN)
