Gwagwalada (FCT), March 28, 2017 (NAN) A cross-section of residents in Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT have decried the poor state of many roads in the council.
The residents, in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Tuesday, said so many roads in the council area were not passable and needed urgent attention.
According to the residents, several cars are damaged and many accidents occur due to the poor state of roads.
Mr Dickson Nwokoma, a civil servant, said that many of the roads were in a deplorable state and should be repaired urgently as the rainy season was fast approaching.
“Government should come to our aid; when you go to the city centre the roads are well constructed, but it is not the same in the area councils.
“As a result of the bad roads, I have to spend a lot more of money to put my car in good shape; with the rainy season approaching, the roads will get worse. I am very concerned,” Nwokoma said.
According to Mr Ahmed Hassan, a resident of Hajj Camp, the bad roads contribute to accidents in the council especially for those that are not familiar with the road.
He said that the deplorable state of the roads was discouraging, adding that he had stopped driving his car to work.
Hassan appealed to the council Chairman, Alhaji Zakari Dobi, to come to the aid of the residents.
Mrs Angelina Okosis, a market woman, said she had to pay more to cabs to convey her goods to the market, adding that with the rainy season approaching, drivers would hike fare.
She also said that the lack of access roads to the market was one of the major challenges faced by traders in the market.
“We suffer a lot to bring our goods to the market; we spend almost all our profit on transportation, so we have no choice than to increase the prices of our goods.
“I believe government can do something about this; the only time you see them working on this road is when there is any election coming up and I believe they do it to deceive people,” Okosis said.
She also called on relevant authorities to repair and maintain the roads in the council for the benefit of residents. (NAN)
