Lagos, Oct. 24, 2017 (NAN) The CEE-Hope Girls Initiative, a non-governmental organisation, on Tuesday in Lagos unveiled an Information Communication Technology (ICT) centre that would encourage and represent girls’ interest in ICT.

Mrs Betty Abah the Executive Director of CEE-Hope, said that the ICT world was male-dominated, hence the need to encourage and support more women in the field.

“ICT is one of the most profitable fields in the world and we want to ensure that we have a voice in that field that will speak for younger generations of women; we want to see women astronauts and more women pilots,’’ she said.

According to her, what a man can do a women can do, if not better.

She advised girls to stop going for softer courses or fields which they felt were women friendly, saying every girl can achieve whatever she sets out in her mind to achieve.

Abah said the girl-child could do anything if given the opportunity, and the CEE-Hope Initiative was put in place to help them achieve their dreams.

Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, President of Women Arise for Change Initiative (WA), said ICT would help expose the girl-child.

“Through ICT, there are different exposures that the girl child can have; ICT will help in reducing isolation, it empowers and advances the course of education,  it is like the brain box changing the game,’’ she said.

Okei-Odumakin said the CEE-Hope initiative was a welcome development and a good thing.

Anuli Obiaga, a Gender and Rights Activist, said participation of women in ICT had been low and there was need for gender equality in the area.

She urged parents to encourage more of their female children to go for science courses in schools.(NAN)
