Lagos, Oct. 12, 2017 (NAN) Downpour of Thursday morning in Lagos stopped scheduled matches from holding at the ongoing 17th Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis as players were set to battle for the first leg semi-finals.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match between Turkey’s Cem Ilkel seeded number 2 and Croatia’s unseeded Matej Sabanov had to be stopped.

The story was the same in the women’s singles, where number one seed, Conny Perrin from Switzerland was on court with French woman, Harmony Tan, seeded five.

In the other court was Mexico’s Ana -Sofia Sanchez, seeded eight, and unseeded Ana Veselinovic of Montenegro.

Meanwhile, Iain Smith, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) supervisor for the competition, told NAN that matches would resume immediately after the rain.

“We are hopeful that the rain will stop soon and that matches will resume.

“We will also hasten up matches because we don’t want to shift matches for tomorrow,’’ he said.

NAN reports that players from 39 countries are currently jostling for ranking points, and the juicy 50, 000 dollars prize money in the men and women’s events.

The finals of the first leg will hold on Oct. 14. (NAN)
