Abuja, Jan. 31, 2018 (NAN) Former world number one and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy has moved up three spots to eighth position, according to the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) released on Tuesday.

McIlroy had a 2017 to forget with injuries and poor finishes, pushing the 28-year-old out of the top-level of the OWGR in 2017.

This was after the man who was number one in the OWGR for 95 weeks failed to record any win in a season for the first time since 2008.

The Northern Irishman moved up in spite of losing out in a thrilling back-nine battle with Chinese youngster Li Haotong at the Dubai Desert Classic.

Another former number one, Jason Day, also returned to the top 10 in the rankings, thanks to the 30-year-old Australian’s victory at Torrey Pines.

Day, who edged out Alex Noren in a play-off at the Farmers Insurance Open to claim his first title since the 2016 Players Championship, moved up four places in the OWGR.
