Lagos, Feb. 3, 2017 (NAN) The Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF) says it is making frantic efforts to ensure that the game of golf receives more national and international sponsorships in 2017.
The federation’s Secretary, Mr Emma Ekong, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.
He said the federation was making conscious efforts at getting the game to the limelight with series of competitions scheduled in its 2017 calendar.
Ekong said the federation would actively involve Nigerian golfers in both regional and national competitions scheduled to commence this month.
“The programme for the year will kick off with regional competitions between now and June. We play our competitions starting from regional, to the grand finale.
“The regional competition will take place in Ibadan for the South-West Region, Jos for the Northern Region and Port Harcourt for the South-South Region.
“The grand finale will hold in August at Uyo after the regional play offs.
“The championships for the junior players are divided into three categories of U-12, U-14 and U-18 also in the Regional Cup,’’ she said.
Ekong said the golfers would converge on each region for the elimination competition ahead of the national draws and grand finale at the Akwa Ibom national competition.
The South-West competition in Ibadan will come up June, while the Northern competition hold this month and those in Port Harcourt will have their own at yet-to-be-fixed date.
“The regional competition will serve as preliminary qualification for the national competition in Uyo.
“The Awa Ibrahim Golf competition coming up later in the year is expected to wind up the junior golf championships for the year,’’ she said. (NAN)
