Education

Lagos, Jan. 31, 2018 (NAN) Uruemu Adu, Head Coach, Esteem Athletics Club, has advised athletes to take their education seriously, saying that a basic university degree would most likely sustain them after their career in sport.
Adu who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos, urged those that had yet to decide about life after sports career to take the bold step now.
“I have always been an advocate for education because it would be useful for athletes later in life.
“For anyone who still feels that sports supersedes education, I appeal to you to get a formal education,’’ he said.
The coach added that getting a university in a course of their choice would improve their lives after they must have retired from their professional sports career.
“Currently, there are lots of sports administrators who were once athletes, if they didn’t get formal education, they will not become the coaches, administrators and officials that they are today.
“When the body cannot actively participate in sports that is when you will realise the importance of the certificate you obtained.
“The younger ones should realise that their career will not go on forever,’’ he said.
NAN reports that some of the former athletes who got formal education are Innocent Egbunike, a former quarter miler who attended the Azusa Pacific University in the U.S. and is a track and field coach today.
The Ezinwa brothers, Davidson and Osmond, also attended the Azusa Pacific University, while Falilat Ogunkoya studied at the Mississippi State University. (NAN)
