Germany to assist in capacity building‎ for Nigeria Police, Immigration officers

Abuja, Jan.‎ 25, 2017 (NAN) Germany has pledged to assist Nigeria in the capacity building of officers and men of the Nigeria Police and Immigration Service in order enhance internal security in the country.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by Mr Ehisienmen Osaigbovo, Press Secretary to the Minister of Inter‎ior, retired Lt.- Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, on Wednesday in Abuja.

The statement quoted the‎ German Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Bernhard Schlagheck, as making the pledge when he paid a courtesy visit to the minister.‎

The German envoy reiterated the desire of his country to assist in boosting the capacity of the Nigeria Police to tackle internal security challenges and other crimes in the country. 

He also stressed the need for Nigeria to have an efficient Immigration Service to properly police the nation’s porous borders and check the influx of illegal migrants and terrorists into the country.

The envoy‎ commended the Federal Government for its efforts at tackling the insurgency in the North-East and other crises in the country.

“We want to also commend the government for its efforts in maintaining ‎‎the rule of law, protection of human rights and enhancing governance,” he said.

The statement also quoted the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau‎, as pledging to strengthen cooperation between both countries.‎‎

He, however, requested for strengthening of the capacity of the Nigeria Police in Forensic crime investigations, ‎as this would help in the quick dispensing of cases and also in Prison decongestion.

The minister also ‎highlighted the important role of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in policing the nation’s borders, as well as the ministry’s role in internal security.‎

He harped on the need for‎ technical and training assistance in order to‎ enhance service delivery in the NIS. (NAN)
