Passenger
Emden, (Germany), April 13, 2017 (dpa/NAN)The police said legal proceedings have been instituted against a bus driver for refusing to accept a veiled woman as a passenger.
Police spokesman in the north-western German town of Leer said on Thursday that the driver had refused to take the woman on his bus several times.
The woman, who is pregnant, was wearing a full-length dress and a niqab, a full-face veil with a slit for the eyes, local newspaper Emder Zeitung reported.
Eduard Dinkela, spokesman for the authorities in the nearby town of Emden, where the incident took place, said the bus company was also facing proceedings.
He added that the driver could be fined up to 10,000 euros (10,600 dollars). A court hearing has yet to take place.
Temmo Poppenga, manager of local transport in the town, which lies near the Dutch border, said that the bus company concerned had acknowledged its wrongdoing, saying the driver had acted out of ignorance.
“But something like this should not happen and should also not be repeated,” Poppenga said.
