Pankshin (Plateau), Nov. 14, 2017 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Pankshin, Plateau, on Tuesday warned truck drivers against recklessness, intimidation and causing accidents on the highways.

The Unit Commander, Mr Nnamdi Ikeh-Akabogu, gave the warning at a news conference in Pankshin to mark the Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) Remembrance Day and the Accident Victims Week.

IKeh-Akabogu said that the high rate of accidents on the nation’s highways was cutting shot the lives of competent, active and young men and women who could contribute to the development of the nation.

“There is need for deliberate action at checkmating road crashes and wanton snuffing of lives of innocent Nigerians from living a good and fulfilled life.

“A situation where Truck drivers   are being fingered as contributors to road crashes due to their deliberate intimidation and causing accidents on our highways would not be tolerated by the FRSC, ’’ he said.

The unit commander said the RTC Week was a period set aside to remember those who lost their lives in road accidents and enlighten the public, including drivers and commuters, on the dangers of overloading and speeding.

According to him, the death on our highways must be condemned by all and sundry and hence the need for all to stand against any acts that could cause road accidents.

He said the RTC Week was slated for intensive prayers for victims of road accidents including the dead and creating awareness on the need for people to adhere to traffic rules and regulations.

“It is not good for drivers to engage in speeding, overloading and dangerous overtaking while on the highways as well as the use of bad vehicles or worn out tyres.

“We also wish to advise motorists to avoid drunk-driving, which is one of the factors causing road accidents, particularly in the hinterland, ’’ the unit commander said.

He said some of the activities lined for the Week include: road walk, awareness campaign at motor parks, Juma’at prayers on Friday and Church service on Sunday. (NAN)
