VVF
Yola, Oct. 17, 2017 (NAN) Kano-based Fistula Foundation has carried out free surgery on 76 Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) patients in Yola, Adamawa.
VVF is an abnormal congenital opening between the bladder (vesico) and the vagina that causes continuous involuntary discharge of urine into the vaginal vault.
It is often caused by prolonged labour, especially for teenage mothers during childbirth and can
also be as a result of violent rape of minor.
Mr Musa Isa, the Chairman of the foundation told newsmen on Tuesday in Yola that the free surgery
was geared toward giving hope to patients who could not afford it.
According to him, the foundation is taking full responsibility of the patients’ surgical expenses and treatment.
He added that the foundation had also assisted significant number of patients suffering from the disease in Kano, Yobe, Bauchi and Oyo states.
The chairman, who noted that the surgery was open to all patients suffering from the disorder, urged the people of the state to take advantage of it.
In his remarks, Mr Aminu Imam, the VVF Surgical Officer at Specialist Hospital, Yola, where the 76 women were operated upon, said five of the patients were referred to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria.
Imam said the five women had special cases that needed further evaluation and advanced treatment. (NAN)
