Maitama
By Martha Agas
Jos, July 3, 2017(NAN) The Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN) said on Monday that the late Maitama Sule, Nigeria’s former permanent representative at the UN, was a true nationalist and a repository of knowledge.
Sule, the Danmasanin Kano, died on Monday in Cairo, Egypt.
FOMWAN, in a reaction in Jos, said that Sule would be remembered as one frank leader, who never failed to give the right counsel irrespective of the status of those concerned.
Speaking through Mrs. Mairo Sani, its leader in Plateau, FOMWAN said that his demise had left a vacuum which might never be filled.
“There is no doubt that his death is a great loss to us and the Nigerian nation; he will be sorely missed,” she said.
The,FOMWAN official said that the orator, who died at the age of 88, was a preacher of peace, unity and a role model in the society.
“ Maitama Sule was the voice of the elders; he was a teacher and died when Nigeria was in dire need of his wise counsel,” she said.
Born in 1929 in Kano, Sule, a Federal Commissioner in the Public Complaints Commission, was a presidential aspirant on the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and was appointed Nigeria’s representative to the UN in 1979.
At the UN, he led the fight against apartheid using his position as Chairman, UN Special Committee against Apartheid.
He was appointed Minister of Mines and Power by Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Prime Minister in the first republic, and was also Minister of National Guidance, a position created by then President Alhaji Shehu Shagari, in 1983, to fight corruption. (NAN)
