Jos, June 4, 2018(NAN) Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN) on Monday says it is poised to partner Plateau Government to curb Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the state.
The Leader of the group in Plateau, Mrs Muhiba Abdulrahaman, said this when a delegation
from Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development paid courtesy visit to the organisation in Jos.
Abdulrahaman said partnership would promote the engagement of women in security and peace building processes.
Represented by the group’s Secretary, Mrs Tawalkatu Abdulrahaman, the leader said GBV had
disrupted the future of many women.
She added that no religion preached violence on women as solution to family or societal challenge.
She noted that “FOMWAN preaches peace and is partnering with other faith-based organisations to
counsel couples and aggrieved persons.
“The organisation also preaches good morals and support the engagement of women as critical stakeholders in peace building processes.”
The FOMWAN leader said the organisation built a clinic and a school as part of efforts to care for the society and build morals in children.
Abdulrahaman added that education, health and economic empowerment were major criteria for peaceful society.
Mrs Hassana Ayika, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry lauded the activities of FOMWAN in the state.
Ayika said the purpose of the visit was to seek the support of FOMWAN in the implementation of the Plateau State Action Plan (PSAP) for its peace architecture.
She explained that PSAP was a UN-supported document that acknowledged the significance of women in building peace in communities.
She added that “the peace architecture is a security document in line with UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325, which borders on gender parity at all levels of decision making.
“Your support as a religious organisation will ensure its success.”
Mrs Niri Goyit, the Project Officer, Search for Common Ground (SFCG) an international non-profit organisation, said it was supporting the UN in the implementation of PSAP.
Goyit said as an international non-profit organisation that promote peaceful resolution of conflict, SFCG believed inter-faith partnership was important in the design of interventions and projects to facilitate more positive outcome.
Funded by European Union, SFCG supports advocacy visits to stakeholders to ensure successful implementation of the PSAP.
The organisation is also supporting the activities of National Association of Peace and Gender Media Practitioners in Plateau, established by UN to strengthen sensitisation on gender related issues. (NAN)
