Lafia, Feb. 6, 2018 (NAN) The Federal Government has urged other states to emulate Nasarawa State Government by investing on Special Education.
The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, made the call on Tuesday during the official inauguration of Comprehensive Special School, Lafia.
The minister said that the effort of Nasarawa State was highly commendable and worthy of emulation by other states.
“All states should key into the efforts towards implementing the strategies for effective and sustainable quality education for the people with disabilities in Nigeria,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to Gov. Uamru Al-Makura for showing concern and personal interest for the education and welfare of persons with special needs.
Adamu also said the Federal Government was working on developing a policy on special education and urged state governments to support the move.
He called on all stakeholders to put all hands on the deck to empower physically challenged persons to contribute to the economic development of the country instead of begging.
Earlier, Prof Jonathan Ayuba, Nasarawa State Commissioner of Special Education, Science and Technology, said the project was the first of its kind and geared toward empowering physically challenged persons.
“We have to make the facilities in the school in a way that they take care of persons with disability in accordance with gender, age grade among others.
“The facilities in the classes and hostels are in a way that it would be easy to cater for the blind, deaf, heard hearing persons, persons with mobility problem, intellectual disability among others,” he added.
Comprehensive Special School, Lafia, was among the projects President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated on Tuesday during his one-day visit to Nasarawa State. (NAN)
