Matriculation

Zaria (Kaduna State), March 28, 2018 (NAN) Prof. Ibrahim Garba, Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) says no fewer than 17 degree courses are being ran by the Federal College of Education (FCE), Zaria in affiliation with the university.
He made the disclosure at the matriculation ceremony of newly admitted students of Bachelor of Education Degrees for 2017/2018 academic session held at FCE, Zaria, Kaduna State.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the affiliated degree courses are all under the Faculty of Education of ABU.
Garba, who did not list the courses, said over 12,400 candidates applied for admission into the 12 Affiliated Colleges of Education, out of which only a little above 5,000 were admitted.
“You should therefore consider your success a special privilege. The matriculation oath which has just been conducted toady is a ceremony that formally initiates you into the body of university community.
“By this process, you have been formally accepted into Ahmadu Bello University rules and regulations.
“An important challenge facing you, therefore, is how you can help to maintain a peaceful, stable and cordial atmosphere that is conducive for teaching, learning and good character building,” he said.
He charged the students to shun social vices and face their studies seriously to achieve the primary goal of being in a university.
“As fresh students, you should note that academic programmes in the university have maximum time frame within which must be completed.
“A student cannot complete his/her programme of study beyond the maximum period allowed due to poor academic performance or unacceptable behaviour is compelled by regulation to withdraw from the university,” he explained.
Earlier, the Provost, FCE, Dr Abdullahi Ango-Ladan said the college places so much value on discipline, advising that students must watch their moral and social behaviors while in the college.
“The purpose of Teacher Training College like this one is to prepare fully qualified professional teachers who will later in life help prepare their own students.
“Not only to learn and pass examination but also to live reputable and acceptable lives in their communities.
“It is for this reasons that the degree is awarded not only for passing examination, but additionally for good behaviour and exemplary conduct,” he said.
According to him , the college abhors any for form of display of anti-social behaviors, especially as it concerns examination malpractice, drug-abuse and unlawful associations. (NAN)
