INDCs
By Vivian Emoni
Abuja, Jan. 27, 2017 (NAN) Dr Samuel Adejuwon, Chairman, Digital Environmental System Management, an NGO, on Friday advised the Federal Government to implement Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) so as to boost the nation’s economy.
Adejuwon, who gave the advice in Abuja in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said that the implementation of INDCs would also engender the country’s development.
He said that the aim of the INDCs was to develop a clean energy, while promoting Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and supporting other activities that could boost the people’s living standards.
He noted that some of the objectives of CSA included enhancing agricultural productivity, supporting equitable increase in farm income and promoting the nation’s food security.
“If you go through the INDCs website, you will know that the proper implementation of the programme will boost our developmental efforts; so the government should address it properly.
“Government should not see it as something that will bring confusion, government should take it as a priority because of its potential benefits,’’ he said.
Adejuwon said that INDCs was a term used under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) for the reduction of the emission of greenhouse gases.
He said that INDCs was a channel through which countries sent agreements to the UNFCCC about their national circumstances, capabilities and priorities.
Besides, Adejuwon said that another objective of the agreement was to ensure the reduction of global greenhouse gas emission, while lessening global temperatures.
He said that Nigeria ought to collaborate with other countries to effectively address the menace of climate change.
“What other countries are doing can affect the climate of another country because climate has no boundary.
“We may claim that we are not the cause of our suffering today but we are suffering from it; it is only when we perform our own activity effectively that we can improve.
“But if we are not doing what we are supposed to do, that is when the development of the country will become a big problem.
“There is no way the proper implementation of INDCs will not create job opportunities, confront the problem of food security and provide comfort for our people.
“There is no way it will not increase productivity; these are part of the content of INDCs,’’ Adejuwon added. (NAN)
