Arrest

Addis Ababa, March 6, 2017 (dpa/NAN)The Ethiopian government on Monday confirmed the arrest of 76 militants who were accused of trying to foment rebellion from Eritrea, the state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate has reported.

According to the report, the militants were arrested on charges of infiltrating Ethiopia.

The report said the detainees are members of the exiled political party Ginbot seven, which has pledged to overthrow the Ethiopian government, according to the broadcaster.

Those arrested had been operating out of Eritrea.

They are suspected of killing two members of the security forces, trying to sabotage fuel deliveries from Sudan and attempting to release prison inmates by force.

Ethiopia, which has a long-running border dispute with Eritrea, accuses Asmara of supporting and training Ethiopian rebel groups.

Ethiopia recently accused one of those groups of planning to attack a large dam under construction in Ethiopia, eliciting an angry denial from Eritrea. (dpa/NAN)
