Abuja, Dec. 29, 2018 (NAN) A popular Nollywood actor, Nobert Young, has called on medical practitioners in the country to respect the rights of patients under their care.

Young made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

He said that those saddled with responsibility of caring for the health of the people should ensure that they carry out their duties efficiently, regardless of the circumstances.

“A young Nigerian musician sang a song; “if you be Senator, senate am well, if you be Governor, governor well”; that is what it is basically.

“When you go to school and read medicine and become a medical doctor, you need to give it your full attention; that is the only way to be relevant in life.

“It is wrong to be carrying your shoulders high and arrogantly being pompous and treating people with impunity simply because you are in medical profession; it is wrong,” Young said.

He also called on the nurses and similar professionals in the health sector to be alert to their responsibilities and respect the rights of patients.

According to him, patient’s rights are fundamental human rights that should be respected, adding that patients desirous of healthcare services should be treated with respect and dignity.

The veteran actor also emphasised the need for Nigerians to know their rights adding, that if any of their rights were trampled upon, perpetrators should be brought to justice.

“Such people should be prosecuted; I believe we have laws in this country guiding and protecting the rights of citizens.

“We need to put these laws to test; let us begin to sue people and this negligence will stop unless the situation is beyond medical expertise.’’

The actor also called on policy makers to ensure that their policy would ensure increased healthcare facilities and services to cope with the health care needs of the people. (NAN)
