Lagos, July 12, 2017 (NAN) For allegedly issuing dud cheques of N400,000, a 44-year-old environmentalist, Aderoh John, was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

John, who lives in Ibadan, Oyo State, is being tried for stealing and obtaining money under false pretences.

According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, the accused committed the offences on May 31 and June 20 at First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Ikeja.

He alleged that the accused issued two dud cheques for N400,000 to the complainant, Mr Musiliu Alausa.

“The accused issued two cheques dated May 31 and June 20 which were dishonoured by the bank on presentation because of  insufficient funds,” he said.

Awase said the accused got a N5 million contract from the complainant to dig a borehole for him.

“The complainant gave a borehole drilling contract to the accused and he deposited N2.5million for the job.

“The accused failed to do the job and the complainant reported the case to the Consumer Protection Council (CPC)
and this led to an agreement that he would be paying N200,000 monthly to the complainant until he finished paying.”

The offences contravened Sections 287, 314 and 322 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Section 314 prescribes 15 years jail term for obtaining money under false pretences.

The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mr J.A. Adigun, said the sureties should be gainfully employed with evidence of two years tax payment to
the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until Aug. 15 for mention. (NAN)
