Enugu, March 7, 2017 (NAN) The Enugu State House of Assembly has commenced plans to amend the education law in the state with a view to boosting quality of education.

Mr Elochukwu Ugwueze, member representing Igboeze South constituency in the state, made the disclosure when members of the Coal City Literary Forum visited him in Enugu on Tuesday.

Ugwueze, who is the Chairman, House of Assembly Committee on Education, regretted that the education law had been obsolete pointing out that it had adversely affected development of the sector.

He said that lawmakers would involve all the key actors in the state in amending the education law.

The lawmaker also decried the poor reading culture among the young generation and attributed the problem to introduction of the social media.

According to him, the social media has been an impediment to reading culture across the globe, not only in Nigeria.

“Many children prefer watching cartoons, pressing Ipads and cell phones to reading.

“Parents are not helping matter because we are the ones that provide these gadgets for them. So parents have a lot to do in managing this ugly trend,’’ he said.

Ugwueze, however, commended the literary forum for its efforts in promoting reading culture and pledged to partner with it in its activities.

Earlier, the President of the forum, Mrs Adaobi Nwoye, solicited partnership with the assembly in enhancing quality of education in the state.

Nwoye noted that in the course of the forum’s activities, it discovered a lot of problems in the sector ranging from poor reading habit among students to unqualified teachers in some private and public schools.

The president called for overhaul of the sector in order to save the state from producing half baked graduates.

She explained that the forum had set up reading clubs in some secondary schools across the state to sharpen their writing skills and promote reading culture among the youth.

Nwoye also said that it would conduct an essay competition for schools as part of efforts to mark the 2017 Children’s Day in the state.

She, however, thanked the lawmaker for work done so far through legislation to boost education quality in the state.

The group also presented books to the legislator. (NAN)
