Lagos, April 10, 2017 (NAN) The traditional ruler of Onigbongbo in Lagos, Chief Muniru Yusuf, has called on Nigerians with different skills to empower the youth with such capabilities in order to stem insecurity.

Yusuf made the call on Monday while declaring open a five-day skill acquisition programme organised for youths in his community.

The programme was organised by the Jewel Empowerment Foundation (JEF), a Non-Governmental Organisation.

The royal father noted that government could not provide jobs for everybody.

He said that those with skills should, therefore, help to fill the gap by training the young ones in entrepreneurial skills.

“Empowering young ones with skill acquisition is one major way to make them responsible and prevent them from committing crimes.

“I appeal to those with different entrepreneurial skills to empower the young ones.

“More than 100 youths in my domain have been trained in different skills.

“I want more individuals, organisations to carry out such training for my people and I will support them.

“I know if my people are empowered with skills, there will be less problem in my area,’’ Yusuf said.

The President of JEF, who is a popular Nigerian actress, Fisayo Ajisola, said the empowerment project was initiated to help the youths to discover themselves.

“My desire is to reduce societal menace and to see youths become skillful, independent and responsible in the society.

“This desire gave birth to the foundation so as to take youths off the street.

“We organise exhibitions, conferences, skill acquisition programmes, seminar and workshops in different states so as to empower young ones to live meaningful lives with good morals,’’Ajisola said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 50 young men and women in the Onigbongbo community participated in the programme.

The training covers baking/confectionery, make-up artistry, bead making and ICT/Web design. (NAN)
