Abuja, March 7, 2017(NAN) Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, has urged the Chief Justice of Nigerian (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, to protect rule of law and independence of the judiciary.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Uche Anichukwu, in Abuja on Tuesday, Ekweremadu, congratulating the CJN on his confirmation, described him as “God-sent’’ at this point of the nation’s democracy.

Acknowledging that the Onnoghen had had an outstanding career, he said, “I congratulate you on this milestone of reaching the peak of your career.

“I commend your demonstration of candour, deep belief in the principle of separation of powers and, importantly, independence of the judiciary.

“You have left no one in doubt of your capacity in terms of ideas and the courage to reform and reposition the judiciary as well as defend its independence and the rule of law,’’ he said.

Ekweremadu enjoined the CJN to help in preserving and nurturing the nation’s democracy in his new assignment.(NAN)
