Warri(Delta), May 24, 2017 (NAN) Mrs Oghenekvwe Abigor, Chairperson, Association of Primary School Head-Teachers of Nigeria (APSHON), Delta Chapter, has urged teachers to improve their teaching capabilities through self-training.
Abigor told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Warri, Delta that improvement in teaching capacity should not be left alone in the hands of the government.
“We can improve ourselves without necessarily waiting for the government.
“The standard of teaching in the country has dropped due to teacher’s inability to upgrade their knowledge in the teaching profession.
“There is the need for teachers to embark on self-training, to improve their teaching skills,’’ she said.
Abigor claimed that the quest for acquisition of material things like money had become a challenge for the teaching profession, adding that one could not be a good teacher if he considered money first.
According to her, teachers should continually improve themselves like the lawyers and other professionals, because the future of our children, to a larger extent, depends on the teachers.
“It is appalling that most teachers are still at the analogue age; they are not even internet-compliant.
“All we need is to develop the passion of building the lives of children and improving on their educational standard,’’ she said.
Abigor, Head Teacher of Olodi Primary School, Warri urged the authorities to re-introduce the Teachers Training Colleges (TTCs) in the country.
According to her, in the olden days, teachers were trained from the TTCs and equipped with the basic rudiments of teaching.
“Nowadays, teachers are not trained on how to cope with children at the Creche. They are trained to teach students in the secondary schools, which is destroying our educational system.
“So the TTCs should be re-established across the country so as to have trained teachers on how to handle kids from Creche to Kindergartens; it is very important, you cannot ignore it,’’ she added. (NAN)
