Educationist tasks parents, teachers on academic performance of their children

Abuja, Oct. 6, 2016 (NAN) Mr Victor Adamu, Moderator, Abuja Spelling Bee Competition, has called on teachers and parents to intensify efforts to improve the academic performance of their children and students.

He made the call on Thursday in Abuja in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Adamu was reacting to the performance of students during the maiden edition of Abuja Spelling Bee Competition organised by Egunec Education support Fund (EESF).

He described the performance of the students as `unimpressive’ and stressed the urgent need for parents and teachers to assist their wards improve their vocabulary.

He said: “about 50 students participated in the maiden screening which was written; we wanted the best 40 students to cross to the next stage of the competition which is oral.

“But less than 50 per cent of the participants scored above five, 21 students scored zero on the list of 20 words.

“This is an indication that there is still a lot of work to be done on the part of teachers and parents.

“ Spelling and vocabulary is the foundation of education; if you cannot spell and understand the vocabulary, you cannot do anything else with regards to learning.’’

Adamu told NAN that other editions of the competition would be held in Lagos, Enugu and Port-Harcourt to assist students learn how to read and write better.

NAN gathered that the participants, who were in Junior Secondary Schools, were drawn from both public and private schools in the FCT. (NAN)
