Zango (Katsina), June 22, 2017 (NAN) In an effort to promote girl-child education, UNICEF has donated N20,000 each to 18 primary school girls in Zango Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Alhaji Sabiu Ibrahim, the Education Secretary of the area made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Zango on Thursday.

He said the beneficiaries were selected from 18 different primary schools.

“Parent should use the money to provide books, uniforms and other materials needed for the education of their children.

“Even last year, UNICEF spent N7.6 million to promote primary school education in the area and it also earmarked N24 million to promote primary education this year.

“N250, 000 will be given to each primary school, through their Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs) to address minor problems such as repairs of chairs, toilets and classrooms,’’ he said.

Ibrahim, therefore, urged parents to enrol their children in school especially the girls for progress and development of the area.

According to him, educating a woman is as good as educating a country.

He applauded UNICEF for the gesture and assured that the resources would be used to achieve the targeted goals.

The secretary lauded the efforts of the state government in renovating and constructing schools and providing befitting school furniture in all 34 local government areas in the state.

Meanwhile, the state government has begun screening of 3,000 applicants who would be recruited as teachers to add to the existing teacher strength in the state. (NAN)
