Benin, April 22, 2017 (NAN) The first Cricket relaunch season in Edo ended on Saturday with impressive display of skills by players from participating secondary schools and cricket clubs in the state,.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the season tagged, “Templars’ Secondary Schools Cricket League/Senior Club League Season 2016/2017” had five secondary school and four clubs participating.

In the schools category, a total of 10 matches were played with the five schools showing exciting performance in each of their four matches with Scholars Imperial Education Centre emerging champions after garnering 32 points

Aho Peter of Edo Boys High School, emerged the best Batsman of the series with a total of 139 runs, he was closely followed by Mirach Akhigbe of Scholars Imperial Education Centre with 93 runs.

Miracle Akhigbe again emerged the Most Valuable. Player (MVP) of the season, while his school mate, Oyivwi Marvelous, topped the bowling chat with 11 wickets.

The Club category saw No Limit Cricket Club topping the senior league with 22 points after each of the four teams had a feel of six matches with a total of twelve matches played in the series.

At the end of the series, a total of 3495 runs were scored in 651 Overs with Ovie Osuaso, an ex-international, of Invictus Cricket Club topping the batting line with 185 runs.

Goodluck Oshodin of No Limit Cricket Club topped the bowling chat with 17 wickets ahead of Kelvin Agbonwanegbe of Invictus and Emmanuel Akhigbemen of No Limit who both had 12 wickets respectively.

Theophilus Ibodeme proved himself to be Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the league with a show of class in batting and bowling.

NAN reports that the state Cricket Association Chairman, Uyi Akpta, at the closing ceremony, offered  scholarship up to the secondary level to six students who showed class in the tournament.

Akpta, who promised that the 2017/2018 season would be an improvement on the relaunch season, also  donated N500, 000 to Edo Boys High School to promote the game.

Similarly, Olu Akpata, of Templars Law Firm, sponsors of the league, also promised scholarship to the best player to study law in any University in the country.

He said exciting packages would be added in the 2017/2018 season for the rapid development of the game in the state. (NAN)
