Benin, April 22, 2018 (NAN) The Edo Football Association (FA) has vowed to surpass its successes in the 2017 football season.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Edo FA boss, Alex Olaye, said this during the 2018 FA/AITEO Cup Competition Draws in Benin on Saturday night.
He said its successes were responsible for the improvement in the number of participating teams in the 2018 competition, adding that 35 club sides would be participating in this year’s competition.
He said that in spite of the increase from 27 to 35 teams, the FA was ready to host a memorable competition.
Olaye said that the prize money for the 2018 competition would still remain the same – N500, 000, N200, 000 and N100, 000 for the first, second and third positions respectively.
“This is the season of the AITEO Cup and the association is fully prepared; you can see that the number of participating teams has increased which is due to the FA’s performance a year ago,” he said.
The association boss also used the occasion of the draws to inform participating teams that Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium would not be the venue of the matches in view of the ongoing renovation work.
He said an alternative standard venue had been secured for matches.
“Be informed that this year’s competition is not going to be played at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium due to the ongoing renovation work by Edo Government,” he said.
NAN reports that the winner of 2017 competition, Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin, was drawn against Eagles Wings FC in the first match.
Football stakeholders across the state also used the draws to brainstorm on how to improve the quality of the competition with the view of taking the game to the grassroots. (NAN)
