Abudu (Edo), June 29, 2018 (NAN)No fewer than 1,240 patients with defective eye sight had benefited from the TY Danjuma Foundation funded free- primary- eye care intervention in Edo that started on Monday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the intervention programme, powered by the Care Vision Support Initiative (CAVSI) was held at Abudu, Orhriomwon Local Government Area of Edo.
The team leader, Dr Tolulope Afolaranmi, confirmed the number of the beneficiaries to NAN on Friday in Abudu.
Afolaranmi said that 167 out of the 1,240 patients underwent surgeries to correct their eye sight defects.
He said that 117 patients were operated for cataract extraction, while 50 others were operated for pterygium excision.
He added that 720 patients were refracted and provided with free medical corrective eye glasses.
He also said that 566 patients were provided with one or more medications for eye care with the exception of pre- and post-operative eye medications.
Afolaranmi said that that the foundation would provide six weeks’ post-surgery review services for patients operated on.
He, however, said that patients with glaucoma, which was beyond the scope of the scheme, were referred to specialised hospitals.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke with NAN commended the foundation for funding the programme.
Mr Joseph Adinu, a beneficiary said that he had been diagnosed of cataract on his left eye over the last four years, but had no money to undergo surgery.
Adinu said he could now see after undergoing surgery under the CAVSI/TY Danjuma intervention scheme.
Another beneficiary, Mr John Eboigbodi, confirmed he could now see clearly after been operated on for cataract on one of his eyes. (NAN)
