Abuja, April 5, 2018 (NAN) Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the South African Development Community (SADC) are set to enhance collaboration in the use of technology in elections.

Representatives of Electoral Management Bodies (EMBs) from both regions would meet in Abuja for an international conference on the use of technology in elections.

A statement from European Centre for Electoral Support made available by the Electoral Administration Expert, Mr Wilson Manji, made this known in Abuja on Thursday.

Many African countries are reportedly relying on, and applying, technological solutions in the administration and management of elections.

Participants would deliberate on issues associated with the choice and deployment of ICT in elections and explore ways to promote collaboration among election bodies.

The conference would also develop modalities to strengthen the credibility of electoral processes in the ECOWAS and SADC regions.

The conference which will hold from April 9 to April 11 is organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions and the Electoral Commissions Forum of the SADC.

Funded by the European Union Support for Democratic Governance in Nigeria, the conference has as its theme: “Opportunities and Challenges in the Use of Technology in Election: Lessons from West and Southern Africa”.

Senior election technology experts from various international organisations are expected to participate, bringing the participation of EMBs to 35 countries and about 100 participants. (NAN)
