Abuja, May 4, 2018 (NAN) A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Friday sentenced a 37-year-old driver, Shamsudeem Ismail, to two months in prison for assault and causing hurt.

Ismail of Lento village in Life Camp, Abuja, was convicted on two-count charge of assault and causing grievous hurt, which he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.

The Judge, Sadiq Abubakar, however, gave the convict an option of N5,000 fine, saying the sentence was
intended to serve as deterrent to others.

The prosecuting counsel, Okagha Ijeoma, had told the court that Shuibu Adamu of Jabi by Airport road Abuja reported the matter at Life Camp Police Station on April 29.

Ijeoma said that on the same date at about 12 p.m., an unknown tricycle rider  was arrested after contravening the tricycle union rules.

She added that the rider called Ismail and informed him about the arrest, when he came instead of resolving the issue, he became angry and started making trouble.

She said the convict violently attacked the complainant and beat him up.

According to her, Ismail inflicted injury on the complainant’s mouth.

She told the court that during police investigation, the convict confessed committing the crime, noting that
the action violated sections 265 and 244 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
