Hire-purchase
By Vivian Ibobo
Lagos, July 6, 2017 (NAN) A 25-year-old driver, Uchena Isaac, on Thursday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court charged
with stealing N100,000 being unremitted weekly car hire purchase money.
Isaac, who resides at No. 8, Oladele St., Ketu, a Lagos suburb, is standing trial on a charge of stealing to which he pleaded not
guilty.
But the Prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 26 at his apartment.
Eruada said the accused stole N100,000 which he ought to have remitted to the complainant, Mr Ogungbenro Taiwo under the weekly car hire purchase payment agreement.
“The complainant reported that he gave the car to Isaac on hire purchase for commercial purposes with an agreement to pay a weekly N25,000 to him.
“The accused defaulted as he could only pay for a month and owed four weeks which is N100,000.
“The accused failed to remit Taiwo’s money and equally refused to return the vehicle to him.
“Efforts to reach Isaac failed as he claimed that he had an accident with the car,” Eruada said.
The offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section stipulates a three-year jail term for offenders.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in
like sum.
Anifowoshe said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State
Government.
The case was adjourned until July 12 for mention. (NAN)
